Native American

These are by far the tamest landraces besides the others from the U.S. These all originated in North America, with majority from the United States but some tribes extend into parts of Canada. Many of these corns are considered very important, some even sacred, to certain tribes and they have been with the tribes ever since they acquired the seeds. Many of these were brought over the Trail of Tears when the tribes were relocated. As with many other landraces these are not exempt from facing extinction. While used in breeding, these Native American corns are still rare and hardly found for sale.

Generally, those from the Great Plains area are shorter and early as well as those from the Northeast and parts of Canada. Those in the Midwest and South are usually taller and have larger ears with medium to later maturity. Many of those from the Northeast are flints or flint derivatives. Southwestern corns, especially from the Hopi, are usually drought tolerant and more flour like in kernel type, the same for the Great Plains area as well.
