Corn. Previously sold by Oscar Will Company. Originated from the Assiniboine Indians of Montana, North Dakota, Alberta and Saskatchewan, Canada. A cool climate and short season corn that reaches 3-4 feet tall and bears 2-3 ears of a mixed flint colored corn.
One set of corns originating from the agricultural tribes of the Plains came from The Oscar Will Seed Company operating in Bismarck, North Dakota from 1885 to 1959 (I maintain a large portion of this collection) by Oscar H. Will. The relationship that he and his son George H. had with the Native American corn originating in the Upper Missouri area presents a unique situation where a respect for the indigenous agriculturist was combined with a need to produce corn varieties that were useful in the harsh climate of the upper Midwest. Oscar Will was a pioneer in the seed business, he also had a great admiration for the Native American agriculturist he encountered in North Dakota where his seed business was located.
