Considered one of the oldest landraces in Mexico, this highland popcorn is almost extinct. It's center of distribution is the Toluca valle, but collections have come from isolated regions nearby. In the Toluca valley it is tied to cultivation by the indigenous groups, one of the few things keeping it going. Generally it is considered very rare and many current populations do not even look the same or match the 1951 description anymore. It is used to make actual popcorn and has good improvement for temperate and cold conditions where it comes from.
