Another rare landrace outside of its native regions in Peru. This is an early beautiful landrace that reaches 5-6 feet tall and has mostly white floury kernels but some are also red, orange, and yellow with mixed shades on 3-5 inch long ears that are rather short and stubby. Hails from a limited distribution on the North Coast of Peru in the Departments of La Libertad, Lambayeque, and Piura at altitudes of about 100 to 200 feet. The largest concentration of this landrace is found in the north city of Chiclayo in the small dry valleys where it is irrigated by summer waters of the small, irregularly flowing rivers. This is a special landrace, as its early vegetative period allows it to be harvested usually only 3-4 months after planting and its great drought tolerance. This landrace only receives usually one, but also two irrigations, including the one for the land preparation. It's commonly grown in medium to large plots and used to also make chicha, corn beer.
