The shortest corn of all Peruvian landraces and never offered. Reaches from 2-4 feet tall and usually has 2-3 ears. It is the highest altitude grown corn as well, being the only type able to survive around Lake Titicaca. Probably even the highest growing corn in the world. This popcorn, either white in color to yellow, red, and others, is related to an extinct race called Confite Iqueno from Coastal Peru. This landrace is the only one that maintains the closest similarity to ear characteristics of the now extinct Confite Chavinense. Chaviense was forced into higher altitudes by farmers where it adapted and evolved into Confite Puneno. Has a low ear position. Confite means popcorn and Puneno designates its native habitat in the Department of Puno, Peru.
