Grown in the temperate-cold regions with high cloudiness on the Sierra Norte de Pubela and surrounding areas in the state of Veracruz, this is another almost extinct primitive Mexican popcorn. The first original collections of the landrace were noted to only have yellow kernels, which is why the name translate into "rice yellow." There are other variants of the landrace now, notably in black and white. The white and yellow forms are used predominantly for tortillas and the darker forms are used as snacks or varying diet. Only certain forms are used for popcorn. First photo by Cecilio Cruz Mota.
