Corn. A rare outside of its range landrace from Coastal Peru. This is a very tall landrace, averaging near 14 feet but plants may be smaller. The ears are rather unproportionate to these huge plants, being only 5-6 inches long but filled with beautiful, blood red kernels that can also be light red, red-orange, and white. It averages usually 90 days to silking and is resistant to both leaf rust and blight. While the Kulli landrace is favored for making corn beer called chicha, this landrace is also used to make the drink, hence the red color. This is the chiefly preferred landrace for making chicha on the North Coast with the red colored kernels providing a deep brownish tint to the brew which is called claro in the region. Since it comes from the relatively dry valleys, it does have drought tolerance, as seen by the locals only flooding the fields twice to carry it to maturity in the deep, high clay and silt soils that are common on the coastal valley areas.
